Douglas Brash

Professor of Therapeutic Radiology
Biography
My lab identified the DNA photoproducts that make mutations after ultraviolet light, used the unusual UV mutations to identify genes mutated by sunlight on the way to skin cancer, identified TP53 as one of these genes and as the signal for UV-induced cell death, showed that UV drives the proliferation of a mutant cell without needing more mutations, and discovered that chemical reactions involving radicals can give biomolecules UV-like energy levels that cause DNA damage yet can also prevent macular degeneration. Husband of another scientist, father of a talented daughter interested in criminology, and seeker of time for jogging or windsurfing.

Michael Caplan

C.N.H. Long Professor and Chair of Cellular and Molecular Physiology
Biography
My laboratory and I study the cell biology and physiology of epithelial cells. We focus on the cells of the kidney, which have a number of fascinating structural and functional properties. A large part of our effort is devoted to investigating a common genetic condition called Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease in order to understand the underlying mechanisms and to identify new targets for therapy. I married my college sweetheart and we have two children and one grandchild. We love to hike and to travel. Nine years ago we got chickens, in an overly literal response to the empty nest that may not have been carefully thought through.

Senior Research Scholar
Biography
For most of my career, I have been a journalist reporting and writing about legal affairs, as a staff writer of The New Yorker, a member of the editorial board of The New York Times, and author of six books. I came to Yale as a journalist on the faculty of Yale Law School to launch and lead Legal Affairs magazine, the first general-interest magazine about the law and lawyers. For the past 26 years, I have also taught at Yale, at the law school, in the English and Political Science Departments, and as Davenport's writing tutor. Early in my journalism career, I wrote a profile about a tap dancer named Sandman Sims whose motto was, "See one, do one, pass it on." That's my aim as a teacher and a tutor and as a Davenport fellow. I get inspiration for that commitment from wide sources -- family, friendship, biking, reading, Long Island Sound, past and current colleagues, and many Yale students.
I received my Bachelor of Arts at Harvard College in 1972 and my JD from Harvard Law School in 1976.
