Kang-i Sun Chang

Malcolm G. Chace '56 Professor Emeritus of East Asian Languages and Literatures

Biography

Prof. Kang-i Sun Chang is recognized as a scholar of classical Chinese literature with a focus on comparative studies of poetry, literary criticism, gender studies, and cultural theory/aesthetics. She has published nine books in English and over thirty books in Chinese. In February 2012, she received the DeVane Medal for excellence in undergraduate teaching and scholarship. (Awarded by the Yale Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa). In April 2015, she was elected to the American Academy of Arts of Sciences. In June 2021 she retired from 39 years of teaching and has since actively involved in the activities at Yale's Henry Koerner Center for Emeritus Faculty. Born in Peking (today's Beijing) in 1944 but grew up in Taiwan in the 1950s as the daughter of a political prisoner during the White Terror, Chang came to the U.S. in 1968 and later found in America a place that her heart could call home. Chang is currently trying to finish a memoir, tentatively titled "Saved by America: A Memoir of the Daughter of a Political Prisoner," reminiscing her life in the U.S. for more than half a century. Throughout the whole book, Chang takes a unique multifaceted approach, combining personal and intellectual trajectories with historical, political, and cultural studies.

Sunny Chu

Seasoned Private Equity Investor and Entrepreneur

Biography

I am an entrepreneur and PE investor, with a dozen years' experience living and working abroad in Asia. My experiences span serving Dutch and British pensions as well as a Middle Eastern sovereign wealth fund. I started my career as a management consultant and a corporate lawyer in Silicon Valley I am a world traveller, these days with my wife and teenage daughter. I am a devoted believer in emerging markets investing and international relations. In my free time, I am heavily involved in the Governance at the Yale Club of New York City, and of course, in the Davenport College fellowship.

Hyung J Chun

Associate Professor of Medicine (Adjunct)

Biography

I've recently transitioned to an Adjunct Faculty role as I've taken on a role with Foresite Capital Management, a healthcare investment firm with ~$3.5B under management. I continue to take care of cardiology patients at the West Haven VA Campus. I reside in New Haven with my wife, 2 daughters, and 2 dogs. You can see me running along Whitney Ave, mountain biking on East Rock, walking the dogs.

Marc Alain Chung

As a former long-time Management Consultant in the Life Science industry with Deloitte, PriceWaterhouseCooper and Quintiles, I co-founded a biotech (specializing in Infertility treatments) with 2 SOM classmates in 2018. We are now a VC-backed life science company with 2 marketed drugs and 2 in our development pipeline. Father of 2, with one in Yale College (Morse College) class of 2026 living in New Haven. Former college athlete at JHU (swimming, water polo & golf) and continue to be active in Golf, Squash and Tennis.

Edward "Ned" Cooke, Jr.

Charles F. Montgomery Professor of the History of Art

Biography

I focus upon material culture and decorative arts, especially from the 17th century to the present. My books include Making Furniture in Pre-industrial America: The Social Economy of Newtown and Woodbury, Connecticut (Johns Hopkins Press, 1996), Inventing Boston: Design, Production and Consumption in the Atlantic World, 1680-1720 (Yale University Press, 2019), and Global Objects: Toward a Connected Art History (Princeton University Press, 2022). My work in expanding the field of decorative arts has led to several awards, including the Iris Foundation Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Decorative Arts (2010) and College Art Association's Distinguished Teacher of Art History Award (2018). Davenport is part of my family's DNA. My father was Davenport 1941, I was Davenport 1977, my nephew Davenport 1999, my niece Davenport 2002, my son Davenport 2008, and my daughter Davenport 2010. I know Yale, and Davenport, well as an alumnus, professor, and parent. I am an avid sculler and always keen to try my hand at a wide variety of crafts.

I received my Bachelor of Arts in History from Yale College in 1977, my Master of Arts in Early American Culture in the Winterthur Program at the University of Delaware in 1979, and my PhD in American and New England Studies at Boston University in 1983.

Nicholas Dawidoff

Biography

Nicholas Dawidoff is the author of six books, most recently The Other Side of Prospect: A Story of Violence, Injustice, And The American City. Each of his books has won or been a finalist for prizes including The American Society of Journalists and Authors nonfiction book award; the New York Public Library’s Helen Bernstein Book Award for excellence in journalism, the Pulitzer Prize, the Kenneth Johnson Book Award for outstanding literary writing about mental illness and the PEN book award for literary sports-writing. His first book, The Catcher Was A Spy: The Mysterious Life of Moe Berg was a national bestseller and was made into a film starring Paul Rudd and Paul Giamatti. His articles appear in The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, The Atlantic and the Ideas section of the The Boston Globe. Father of two, husband of Kaari Pitkin, member of the Advisory Board of the Wesleyan (University) Center for Prison Education, a member of the Honorary Council of the Board of Directors of the MacDowell artist’s residency program, and a board member of Hopkins School.

Biography

I am the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Yale Lightweight Rowing Team since 2012. Before coming to Yale I was a long-time member of the United States National Team, and worked in technology startups. I currently live in Prospect, CT with my wife, Leah. I spend most of my time working with our undergraduates on and off the water, and recruiting the next class of Yale oarsmen. I am an avid reader on the topics of technology and investing.

Christopher "Chris" di Bonaventura

Biography

I've spent my entire career in financial services, including in chronological order: public accounting, public finance investment banking, corporate finance investment banking, private wealth management, and institutional and family office custody and financial services. I am now affiliated with a provider of private credit services to middle market companies. Devotee of forest management and preservation; public policy nerd; Member of the 1977 NCAA National Champion Skeet Shooting team; sporting clays competitor; fly fishing enthusiast; terrible golfer. Devoted husband; father of three daughters; grandfather of seven (5 granddaughters, 2 grandsons).


Ellen Doon

Project Manager for Strategic Initiatives, Beinecke Library

Biography

I have worked at Yale and at the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library for twenty-five years. For most of that time I worked with and supervised others working with archival and manuscript collections. I live in New Haven with my husband and two teenage sons. I enjoy reading, gardening, taking walks, and spending time with my busy family.

I received my Bachelors in English Language and Literature from Smith College in 1992 and my Masters of Library and Information Science from Simmons College Graduate School of Library and Information Science in 1997.
